How to Get Through Tough Situations

We all go through trials of various kinds. As Christians we have a choice in how to handle them.

There is an epic scene in the Bible (one of many) when God splits the Red Sea and allows Moses and the Israelites to cross it on dry ground.

Now hold up… God… Moses… they expect us (the Israelites) to cross the sea?

Are we really supposed to go –all the way over to the other side of our situation?

Now I don’t know about you, but I might be a little hesitant. Of course, I can see the walls of water on both sides… and my knees are little weak just thinking about it. The question running through my mind is, “what if this swallows me up?

Why does God place us in situations that seem crazy, that seem completely beyond reasonable thinking, why do we find ourselves in situations that make zero sense to us at the time?

God puts us in, and sends us through, situations so that He might receive the glory. Exodus 14:17-18 says this, ” I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them. And I will gain glory through Pharaoh and all his army, through his chariots and his horsemen. The Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I gain glory through Pharaoh, his chariots and his horsemen.”

Unfortunately, when the average person sees someone blessed, one of their first emotions is jealousy—not happiness that God has blessed their journey.  However, when we see someone pulled through a tough situation, we praise God and are happy for them.

Which response brings more glory to God the Father? The praises of course.

Now I am NOT saying that God always puts us in these situations, but sometimes he does.

Isaiah 48:10
“Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction.”

Psalm 66: 10-12
“For You have tried us, O God; You have refined us as silver is refined. You brought us into the net; You laid an oppressive burden upon our loins. You made men ride over our heads; We went through fire and through water, Yet You brought us out into a place of abundance”.

Genesis 22: 1-2
“Now it came about after these things, that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” He said, “Take now your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you.”

And of course there is the whole book of Job!!

Now sometimes, we put ourselves in bad situations through bad choices. We have the affair, we lend money to an irresponsible person, we rack up debt. Or it could be life just happens, as in the cases of disastrous weather, sickness, death, stock market crashing. And, still other times, we can find ourselves in tough positions due to other peoples choices: addictions in a family member, an unwanted divorce, robbery. The Bible speaks to this too.

James 1:2-4
“Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”

1 Peter 1:6-7
“In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ;”

Acts 14:22
“strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying, “Through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God.”

And then there is the affliction from the enemy: Revelation 2:10
‘Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, so that you will be tested, and you will have tribulation for ten days Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.”

And YET—God opens the path. He parts the water. He makes a way for us to travel through our situation when we feel trapped. Sometimes the way out seems unreasonable. Sometimes we have to take actions that scare us. Sometimes we have to just trust that “God’s Got This” and will work it out for the good— even if we don’t know how at this point.

Life! There is just no way to get through life without sticky situations that require God’s intervention. And that is how He wants it. He wants us to have times when we need Him. When we need Him we cry out to Him. We draw closer to God. And that glorifies God. When others see our faith in the midst of mind-boggling situations, they are amazed. They take stock of their own faith. They think about this faith in God and, just maybe, think of coming to Him themselves. And this brings glory to God.

Today, if you are trapped between an army and a path that requires faith, believing that God will keep you and get you to the other side…. Trust God.

It is not easy. That is why it is called faith. We believe in that which we cannot see.

Father strengthen our faith when it is required to trust in You. We love you Lord. We want to believe. We need to believe. And, we claim to believe in You. But sometimes our faith wavers as it should not. Strengthen us through your word, that when testing comes, we will have your solid word to cling to. Give us an experience with you. Develop our relationship with you for this is how we develop our trust. As we give you the little things in life—remind us You want us to give You the Big things in life as well. We want to bring You glory for You alone are worthy of glory. Let it be so in our lives. Amen

Until Next Time~
