So give yourselves to God. Stand against the devil, and the devil will run away from you. James 4:7 ICB
Do you believe this statement?
Were you trained in how to stand against the devil? I sure wasn’t.
How did Jesus stand against the devil? I think this is the easiest way for us to learn how to do it. You see, the verses about spiritual warfare and putting on the armor of God are confusing. But we will look at that too.
Jesus faced the devil while in the wilderness. In fact, he was lead there for that purpose. It was a testing of his spirit to be faithful to his calling. The devil came at him with promises that were enticing. And he used scripture to try to lure Jesus from his obedience to God.
Jesus fought the devil thru his fasting and the Word of God…the correct Word of God– not the Word used to justify selfish wants. That is a great reason for us to be in the Holy Word of Scripture. We not only learn of God’s way, and God’s plan, but we learn the words and ways to fight the devil when he starts to make sense to us.
We as humans are such instantaneous gratification seekers. We have so many wants and needs vying for our attention all the time. Our wants can go unfulfilled for months and years…then comes what seems like a good answer… But is it?
Charles Stanley often speaks of the difference between “the good choices vs. the best choice.” In fact it is his reasoning that these “good” options arrive just before the “Best” (God’s best) unfolds. And we do see this in Jesus.
He was baptized and just before his ministry started… he is given what sound like good choices for him. But they were NOT what God had planned for Jesus.
How many times could we have taken a different path but we chose to jump on an early option that may or may not have been God’s best; yet, we didn’t want to wait on the “best”. We didn’t take time to align up the option within our Spirit and the Word?
Good enough is not always God’s best.
We are not taught to trust our Intuition for the most part. It is a shame because that is one way the Holy Spirit talks to us—with in our spirit which can seem like a hunch/ a leading/ a nudging.
We have to be armed with the Word of God. God’s will is always going to align with the Word he has set down for us.
So we fight the devil through: The Word of God, through prayer, through fasting and through the armor as a way of life.
Ephesians 6:10-18 International Children’s Bible (ICB)
Wear the Full Armor of God
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his great power. 11 Wear the full armor of God. Wear God’s armor so that you can fight against the devil’s evil tricks. 12 Our fight is not against people on earth. We are fighting against the rulers and authorities and the powers of this world’s darkness. We are fighting against the spiritual powers of evil in the heavenly world. 13 That is why you need to get God’s full armor. Then on the day of evil you will be able to stand strong. And when you have finished the whole fight, you will still be standing.
14 So stand strong, with the belt of truth tied around your waist. And on your chest wear the protection of right living.
15 And on your feet wear the Good News of peace to help you stand strong.
16 And also use the shield of faith. With that you can stop all the burning arrows of the Evil One.
17 Accept God’s salvation to be your helmet. And take the sword of the Spirit—that sword is the teaching of God.
18 Pray in the Spirit at all times. Pray with all kinds of prayers, and ask for everything you need. To do this you must always be ready. Never give up. Always pray for all God’s people.
To stand strong we use:
Good news of peace
God’s teaching (the Word)
and Prayer- asking for what we need & praying for others
Don’t get hung up on “the belt” and “the helmet” and other gear names. Just look at the elements they represent. And if we put on the above qualities daily, in living our lives, we will be enabled to stand strong against the evil one.
In Christ we have all victory and through his example in life and in the desert we have the perfect guide to stand and make the devil flee.
Until Next Time~
