Spiritually bankrupt? Good news!

You have heard it said:

Matthew 5:3 New International Version (NIV)

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

But this verse is listed in different versions in interesting ways. For instance:

Matthew 5:3 New Living Translation (NLT)

3 “God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.

Matthew 5:3 International Children’s Bible (ICB)

3 “Those people who know they have great spiritual needs are happy. The kingdom of heaven belongs to them.

When I read the NIV version, which is most familiar to me, I actually thought of people who were downcast. I wasn’t focusing on people who had spiritual poverty.

I like these two other versions for bringing this new insight to me. I can completely see how and why God would bless those of us who are aware that our spiritual needs are great and make us totally dependent upon Him.

God loves, loves, loves our dependence on Him. He is forever telling us to not lean on our own understanding, to not listen to fools, to trust Him, to seek Him in all our ways.

But if we are trying to be self-sufficient, or hastily asking others for their thoughts and opinions…if and when we think we’ve got this life down…we lose our NEED for the Creator, Sculptor, Guide, and ultimately our Saviour.

When we admit our spiritual needs, God gets exited because it gives Him the chance to fill them in all kinds of ways.

And that

is how we are blessed.

Until Next Time

Blessings, Kate
