I heard an interview last night where someone said that being busy (our cultural mandate of “beast mode”, Killin’ it!!) is an anti Christ spirit. At first I thought “hold up, there isn’t a spirit behind everything!” As I listened, I discovered what the speaker meant was that:
We have tendency to stay hyper busy as mandated by the culture of success and fear! We sometimes want or expect ourselves so to reach certain heights or goals in order to measure up (or we are nothing, or not as good). This can build fear that we, and our family: may run out, might not have enough in crisis, won’t get ahead before AI takes our jobs, …and for me “won’t have money to take care of myself in later years.
In this way– yes, I agree! Hustle culture to fit in is against the guidance of God. We are not to strive to fit in, or compete, with the world. Fear and production under excess stress can move us from trust & normal preparation into fear-driven activity over a future we know nothing about. It also exempts any provision, or increase, God already plans to bring us into before these imagined deadlines.
My initial response to what was being said– “I’m so glad I don’t live by that busy imperative in my life. I do not rush here and there all week. I study, take breaks, run regular errands. And I have the luxury of a grown married child so my life phase does not add extra responsibilities of time and resources.
But then…. this morning I got a revelation. .I do have fear of the future and a sense of not keeping up enough for unexpected problems or old age. I fear this extension and rerouting of my academic work will shorten time to gather what I need once the education allows me to bring in more finances.
The future is unknown.
God says to trust. Christ says God will take care of us since he takes care of flowers and birds.
This fear and compulsion that “I must do xzy to prevent or prepare for 123” is NOT from God. And is NOT trusting HIm.
