Train Your Discernment: The Importance of Studying Scripture Directly

—

I’ve heard several times that to train people (at the highest level) to spot counterfeit money…the government puts them in a room daily (for up to 4 months) with nothing to do but count, and look at REAL paper money. (no fakes).

The theory, and proven results — is when any fake bill is slipped into the stack at the 4 month point they immediately know it is fake. BECAUSE all they have seen is REAL.

We, I, need to get into the Word directly — more than— taking in preachers, blogs, podcasts second hand scripture delivery.

If I spend considerate amounts only on the REAL Word of God— I will immediately know when it is twisted, distorted, or misused.

I have a long background OFF/ON of being in the Word. And true enough— sometimes I can detect misuse. But “sometimes” isn’t enough in a day where SOOOOO many are tickling ears and my flesh likes what they say or promise.

Until Next Time~

  1. Amen and amen 🙏🏽 I have heard that said too. And I agree, especially when it comes to studying the Word of God for ourselves.

  2. Kate, I agree wholeheartedly about the need to stay immersed in the Word. I also think we need the ‘iron sharpening iron’ that comes from a verse by verse study with other believers. Not a book about the bible, but just letting Scripture interpret Scripture.

    1. YES Sue!!! I am right there with you! My hunger for such a community is getting stronger. We do have discussion in Sunday School which I thoroughly enjoy but it is not verse by verse so we must be careful to NOT take scripture out of context.

      1. Although I love the concept of getting together in homes for ‘Life Groups’ that has largely replaced Sunday School tradition, many have gotten away from the verse by verse approach. Choosing instead to study books about the Bible instead. I think it’s caused a shallowness of the whole counsel of God. Plus, there’s often no vetting of the books and/or authors.

      2. Yes. In fact I had been going to church with a few friends. Last Sunday (2 days ago) there were a couple sentences that seemed awkward when trying to read, so I read it a few times. It still wasn’t really making sense. The teacher of the class asked directly about that sentence (I had read ahead. We weren’t there yet but he was asking in advance and then told everybody to read about it for this coming week).

I did some research because the concept really took a word and made a whole concept and core belief out of something by way of semantics. It is un-necessary, in that “if” this concept cannot be carried out– this church denomination doesn’t actually believe it makes a difference.

So for once, I actually was glad for the book because that led me to research another concept that came up in relation to the first concept. I realize I do NOT believe the two teachings; hence I will not be returning.

I have started listening to audio readings of the Bible book by book and also then using Bible tools for further exploration.
